To be a UX designer is to be a selfless individual.

Why do I say this? Well, a good user experience designer is one that is empathic. One basic tenet in UX design is putting the user first — artistic motivations and personal inclinations get moved to the back seat.

Let’s consider a statement explaining the basic UX framework: Designs for you. Ultimately, a designer produces designs for another person to use. Breaking it down, we can see that there is an object: Designs, a purpose: for, and a receiver: you. The designs encompass everything the user physically interacts with; the purpose emphasizes the reason for creating the object, and the receiver solidifies the notion that the design is for a someone else.

The basic UX framework is something that can be applied to life in general. Humans, being social creatures, need to understand that while we are driven by personal self-interest, life does not stop there. To live for others is to gain responsibility, and responsibilities are what make life more meaningful.

It is integral to put others first. Lessons from the course can be translated in a way that benefits the people you interact with. Whether it be becoming more understanding through creating user personas, considering the six thinking hats in various scenarios, or utilizing user flow to understand pain-points in your work place, any UX lesson can be applied to many aspects of our reality.

Our conscious reality is made up of the various personalities and stories we have with multiple individuals. Knowing UX design opens the door to more meaningful relationships and interactions because, at its core, empathy is the foundation.

So how will I sustain having a UX mindset after this course? I’ll put others first, wherever I am and in whatever I do.
